Always have a copy of your passport with you at all times while traveling internationally. Even if you decide to safeguard your passport by locking it up at your accommodation, always have a copy with you to ensure you have a way to prove your nationality and identity if stopped by local authorities.

The best practice to protect documents is to keep copies: the original, a physical copy of the original, and a digital copy available on a “cloud” or in an email that can be accessed when you need it. A good idea is to email it to a parent or friend so someone can send it to you.
